Stanley Nelson on his Film “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution”

Host Jo Ann Hardesty speaks with Stanley Nelson, director of “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution,” the first feature-length documentary to tell the Black Panther Party’s story from beginning to end, illuminating its significance to broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails.

The story is told through rare archival footage and interviews with the people who were there: Police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and who left it.

The Hollywood Theatre in northeast Portland will host an advance screening of a new Black Panthers documentary and a post film panel of local civil rights activists as a fundraiser for the NAACP Portland chapter. The special event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., the day before the theater begins a regular run of the movie on Oct. 9 with multiple show times offered. Dawn Smallwood of the Hollywood Theatre will also talk about the special screening and fundraiser.
