PORTLAND, OREGON – The Portland Central America Solidarity Committee (PCASC) announces its first annual Spring Brunch event on to be held Sunday, April 17, 2011. This year’s brunch is inspired by the defiant people’s movement of Honduras. Breaking bread with us will be Gerardo Torres, spokesperson for the US and Canada of the International Commission of the National Front of Popular Resistance. The event will also feature a live performance by acclaimed local singer/songwriter Edna Vazquez and a multimedia presentation on PCASC’s History Project.
About keynote speaker Gerardo Torres:
Since the 2009 military coup d’etat that removed democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya, repression in Honduras has increased to levels seldom seen before. But the coup was also a catalyst for the coming together of a massive popular resistance of students and youth, landless peasants, union workers, teachers, artists, LGBT activists, and many more. Torres, who has been active in the non-violent resistance since the first day of the coup, will offer an eyewitness account of repression and hope in Honduras today and the people’s dream to “re-found the State” based on justice and equality.
