Patricia Kullberg hosts this episode of the Old Mole, which includes the following segments:

Countering the Far Right: Bill Resnick interviews Michael Zeller about the demobilization of far-right, white supremacist demonstrations and marches, in particular the role of counter-mobilization by the left, including very large and dramatic challenges at white supremacist events to demonstrate overwhelming popular opposition. They also discuss the importance of decisively defeating white supremacist political parties in electoral contests, and how that can be done. Zeller is a doctoral candidate in Political Science at Central European University, who is researching counter-mobilization against far- right demonstrations. He also works on the project, “Building Resilience against Violent Extremism and Polarization,’ or BRaVE.

Mass Shootings: From the archive 2015, Jan Haaken interviews Kathy Farr, professor emeritus at PSU, on her research on school shootings. She looks at middle and high school rampage shootings over the past 30 years and takes up some of the gender and social dynamics that seem to be driving these expressions of rage. They also discuss the inadequacy of simply calling for more mental health counseling. As mass shootings spike again across the US, this discussion is as relevant now as it was 6 years ago. This show originally aired in 2017. For more see the 2019 op-ed in the LA Times: We've studied every mass shooting since 1966. Here's what we've learned about the shooters and the 2020 op-ed in Truthout: Gun Manufacturers are Endangering Public Health. They Should Be Held Liable.

The Well-Read Red: Patricia Kullberg reads from an opinion piece by freelance journalist, Kayla Hui, who argues that the answer to the upswing in anti-Asian violence is not more policing, which only promotes more violence and drives a further wedge between communities of color. “The Answer to Anti-Asian Racism is Not More Policing” was originally published in the online journal Prism Reports, one day before a 21-year-old white male shot and killed 8 people, 6 of whom were Asian women.
