We at the Kill Ugly Radio Heavy Industries Trust© were both pleased and honored to have on as our special guest Portland artist Bruce W. Hodges.
Mr. Hodges has been making unique sounds with his electrified Jew's harp under the moniker The EJH for years and he came down to the KBOO air room for a live set of his mind-bending music.
From the liner notes of Bruce's CD:
"It has been found in a few genres. Blues, country-western, folk and others. Well, over the decades with nothing else better to do I would twang walk everywhere I went. My first decade I always had one in my pocket a Snoopy or an American folk Harp. Today it’s a cole black and I stopped carrying them around about 20 years ago. I always wondered what it would sound like if it was played through guitar effects. I never knew for at least another decade. Then I would occasionally bump into a mic and some kind of effect usually a reverb or a simple delay, phase or flange. This scenario was usually some person I’ve met who was in a band and would show me his guitar and stuff..."
Bruce deftly played multiple harps while switching through various effects to make an audio sculpture that swirled around the stereo spectrum.
He also chatted with us briefly about his unusual technique, his harps and effects.
