This month marks 20 years of 'Grateful Dead & Friends' on KBOO! It's sort of hard to believe. How long have you been listening?
As part of recognizing this milestone, the show's hosts are doing this special one-time fundraising 'Sound to Listeners' campaign to purchase a new Studio Transmitter Link (STL) for the station. This essential piece of hardware sends the broadcast studio signal to our transmitter in the West Hills of Portland, which then sends it to you. Without this piece of gear, no one but the DJ would ever hear KBOO. Gear wears out and it's time for a new STL. Here's our Chief Engineer giving some more details.
My approach today is to build upon the station's use of the S-T-L acronym, partly by featuring music from the city most closely associated with these three letters - St. Louis (STL is their airport code). The Grateful Dead played there over 20 times between 1968 and 1982. The years 1968-1973 had annual visits from the band with multi-night runs in 1971, 1972 and 1973. I'll play selections from some St. Louis shows (wholly unconnected to this, though it is a fine idea).
To complement these selections, I'll include tunes from shows in other cities where 'stl' is part of the place name. Got any guesses?
Help us buy the new Station Transmitter Link.
