This week is the first anniversary of Oregon's Big Burn. A year later the impacts of the wild fires that raged across Western Oregon on Labor Day last year are still very much with us. But the gravest impact of all is the U.S. Forest Service and the Oregon Department of Transportation's efforts to log so-called "hazard trees" along hundreds of roads in the Mt. Hood and Willamette National Forests that burned in last year’s wildfires.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Samantha Krop, co-founder of the Pacific Northwest Forest Climate Alliance, and Timothy Ingalsbee, co-founder and executive director of Firefighters United for Safety, Ethics, and Ecology, about the damage this massive clearcutting does to recovering forests, and steps impacted communities and forest activists are taking to protect the forests from further desecration.
