Before there were beach rangers on Oregon's coast, Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition had the idea to create an army of volunteers to monitor Oregon's coastline for changes (both natural and human-made).
The CoastWatch "Adopt a Mile" program persists today much like it did originally - as a citizen monitoring program that engages Oregonians in stewardship over their shoreline. The program has expanded, however, to include not only individual volunteers, but partnerships with a number of environmental groups & businesses as well as citizen science programs, training, iNaturalist challenges, and more, now available to volunteers.
CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Jesse Jones shares about the history of CoastWatch and the exciting additions to the program thanks to technology.
