Celebrated graphic memoirist Alison Bechdel mines her family history for inspiration
In this episode of Words and Pictures from May of 2012, we revisit Alison Bechdel, creator of the long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For and author of the graphic memoirs Fun Home and Are You My Mother?
Alison may be best known for the “Bechdel Test,” which originated in a 1985 episode of Dykes to Watch Out For and queries whether a particular film features at least two women characters who talk to each other about something other than a man.
After this conversation originally aired, Fun Home was adapted into a Tony-award-winning stage musical, and in 2014, Alison herself received a MacArthur Genius Grant.
