Horse racing has historically been known as the Sport of Kings. But in the modern day, horse racing is demonstrably rampant with corruption abusive drugging of horses, catastrophic injuries, and dangerous breeding practices. The Jockey Club’s own Equine Injury database reports that over 7200 horses die every year on the track. That includes the 12 that died at Churchill Downs – home of the Kentucky Derby – in just 30 days surrounding the derby. The other sad fact is that many racehorses end their careers in slaughterhouses when they stop making money. On this month's episode of Voices for the Animals, Michele Coppola talks with Susan Kayne, former racehorse owner, trainer, and now the Founder and president of the award-winning Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation, about why it is time to consider an end to horse racing.
