What we don't learn about Henry Frick at the Frick collection
American Industrialist Henry Clay Frick made a fortune in coke and steel, built a mansion on 5th Avenue, filled it with European masterpieces, and willed it to the people. What could be wrong with that? Nothing, except that it makes a hero out of a villain and turns the art he bought into an advertisement for himself. Gabriel Hainer Evansohn's article in the Summer issue of Jacobin Magazine tells the story of the man, his money, and his art and how it aims to make us thankful for the beneficence of our rulers. Clayton Morgareidge reads exerpts.
