Joseph Gallivan talks to artist Hannah Theiss about Specimen, at Blackfish Gallery

On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 11.30 a.m. Joseph Gallivan talks to artist Hannah Theiss about her new show, called Specimen, at Blackfish Gallery in the Pearl District. Dice talks about painting with alcohol inks on glass, the way they relate to her mood, and her exploration of her diagnosis of bipolar two disorder. She speaks frankly about depression and creative mania, how the two relate to each other and the role of medication in controlling them.

My new show, Specimen...takes a deeper examination into my experience living with Bipolar 2. In these new pieces, I’m really trying to capture what large chunks of time passing feel like, the variance in my moods from day to day, the bigger movements and sweeping feelings that stretch on for weeks or months, all layered together in complex compositions bursting with texture and color.

Joseph's special note: I am training to be a TriMet bus operator, and hope to begin my regular route, the 75, on August 24. Come along for the ride.
