Women's History Month 2026

March is Women’s History Month, so the March 4 Pastures of Plenty show on KBOO features songs of women’s struggles and stories as sung by some great women artists.

We’ll hear from the pioneering women blues artists from the dawn of the recorded music era and their descendants, women who were part of the Greenwich Village folk music scene in New York City in the 1960s, women singing songs about women’s struggles in the workplace, and some local Portland women’s voices.

To get you in the mood for International Women’s Day March 8 we’ll hear women’s voices from Africa, Morocco, Scotland, and Ecuador.

Featured women blues artists include pioneering Mother of the Blues Ma Rainey, Empress of the Blues Bessie Smith, the Uncrowned Queen of the Blues Ida Cox, Sippie Wallace, and contemporary blues greats Bonnie Raitt, Rory Block, and Portland’s own Mary Flower.

Women from the 1960s Greenwich Village scene we’ll hear from are Karen Dalton, Judee Sill, Carolyn Hester, Joan Baez, and     Mimi Farina.

International women’s voices are Oumou Sangare from Africa, Scotland’s Karen Mathieson with Capercaillie joined by African singers Sibeba, Yurak Pacha and Yanna Guillan from Ecuador, and Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki from Portland band Seffarine.

Portland artists Avery Hill, Lauren Sheehan, and former Portlander Tracy Grammer round out the artists heard on the program.
