Jefferson HS students walkout for their teachers
Jefferson High School students walked out Friday to support Portland teachers in their bitter contract struggle with the Portland school district. Emphasizing class size and workload, prep time and individual instruction, the students called for the Schools Portland Students Demand, saying that their teachers working conditions are students learning conditions. Organized by the Jefferson Student Union, the activists also emphasized demands specifc to their school, Oregon's only majority African American high school, which they said had been labeled a "failure" and disrespected in the news media. They also criticized the school district for "racist school closures" in majority Black and Brown schools in the Jefferson cluster. This raw audio was recorded by KBOO labor reporter, Jamie Partridge.
