Community bike ride and event to respond to gang violence in North Portland Sunday, August 24th
Take Back the Streets is a community ride and event happening this Sunday, August 24th in North Portland as a response to gang violence. The event aims to promote community ownership through a bike ride followed by a health and anti-violence resource fair at Columbia Park, located at the corner of Lombard and Russell. Jason Washington and Demarcus Preston are at the origin of the idea and they partnered with the Community Cycling Center to organize the event.
On Bread and Roses we will welcome the organizers of the ride as well as some of the guest speakers who will address the crowd at the event, to discuss the bike ride, explore some of the challenge that African American youth face today, especially in the light of Micheal Brown murder in Ferguson, MO, and to consider alternative options that encourage grassroots advocacy and community ownership.
We were joined in the studio or on the phone by Karin Malbrough, Program Director with Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest, Cicely Rodgers, PPS teacher, Kheoshi Taylor-Mayes, community activist, Teressa Raiford, political activist and community organizer, Emanuel Price, founder of SCAFÈ, Sheena Llaoa, Systems Builder & Community Activator for the Community Cycling Center, Jason Washington and Demarcus Preston, community advocates.
