Exploring the Social, Political, Cultural and Ethical Dimensions of Mathematics Education
Michelle Schroeder Fletcher hosts a panel discussion with presenters from the Mathematics, Education and Society Conference, a biennial international conference being held this week at Portland State University. The Participants are exploring social, political, cultural, and ethical dimensions of mathematics education. This is the first time that the international conference is being held in the US.
Panelists include: Ubiratan D'Ambrosio, a Brazilian mathematician who developed the field of Ethnomathematics; Swapna Mukhopadhyay, professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Portland State University and a mathematics educator focusing on issues of critical mathematics education and cultural diversity; Peter Gates, one of the founders of Mathematics, Education and Society, or MES, and the chair of the International Group for MES8; and Brian Greer, mathematician at Portland State University.
