Larry Bolden reviews What She Left Behind, the harrowing tale of an eighteen year old woman
who finds herself committed to a state asylum due to her rebelling against
her father’s choice of whom she will marry. The author, Ellen Marie
Wiseman, did extensive research into how people, mainly women, were
treated in state-run hospitals, and how often enough poverty or emotional
distress could land them in institutions from which the only escape was
death.
