Two old Earth First!ers talk about activism, animism & a benefit this Friday at Velo Cult
Our guest today is Karen Coulter, who has dedicated herself tor over two decades to protecting native forest ecosystems on the east side of the Cascades with her organization, the Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project. Host Paul Roland has crossed paths with her numerous times during their involvement with Earth First! and other projects and campaigns.
As we all know (more or less), some of the worst fears and predictions of "environmentalists" and earth scientists seem to be coming to pass with global climate destabilization. It's the "cumulative impact" of all cumulative impacts, as it were.
Forests, like all other eco-zones or biotic communities, are being impacted by climatic changes, as well as by the same old invasive industrial practices that got us into this predicament to begin with. As we persevere in our efforts to slow down and ground the machine, as well as understand what we're actually facing, it can be good to remember the direct, unmediated encounters with the natural (non-humanized) world that have nurtured our sense of at-home-ness with the earth and the cosmos. Even in the city (though with certain difficulties...). Sudden and intriguing encounters with other animals, synchronistic occurences, mystical intuitions, that sort of thing....
Karen and Paul will be talking about all of the above, as well as current threats to the eastside forests, and an upcoming Benefit Concert with three musical groups, some updates and a raffle. https://www.facebook.com/events/788986067871927/
