Carlos Chavez interviews Phil Stockton with Big House Kite on his upcoming event, "Within These Walls", a town hall conversation about the nature and state of solitary confinement in Oregon and the U.S. today.  The event will include a panel of state legislators, past members of the incarcerated community, law enforcement officials and members of affected communities, with the objective of having an open and constructive conversation about solitary confinement, long term-effects and opportunities for the future.   Monologues, scenes, music and poetry will be performed by local actors, musicians and former inmates.

Phil Stockton has worked as an entertainment professional for over 25 years, as an Equity actor, writer, director, and educator. He has taught for the Young Conservatory at A.C.T., Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and for several years at the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, where he taught Media Literacy and Theatre Arts to at-risk youth. His educational experience led him to his work in prisons, where he has initiated play creation programs at 6 incarcerated facilities, including San Quentin in California, and MacLaren Youth Correctional and Salem State Penitentiary in Oregon, where he presently volunteers.

“Within These Walls” will be held the evening of Wednesday, September 28th, at the Cerimon House in Portland, Oregon.
