Dmae presents two original works with dancer/choreographers Oluyinka Akinjiola of Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater and Subashini Ganesanat New Expressive Works (N.E.W.). They're both collaborating on IGNITE on Jan.20--22. And in the second part of the show we hear from playwright Francesca Piantadosi about the workshops she conducted with youth in Stories from MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in a project produced by Ann Singer, executive director of Rogue Pack, one of the many offerings at the 2017 Fertile Ground Festival.

“Ibukun/The Celebration” by Oluyinka Akinjiola is inspired by Akinjiola’s recent trip to Nigeria, the passing of her grandmother, and
experiencing funeral celebrations in Nigeria. Featured in the performance is Rejoice! Diaspora Dance
Theater, Jujuba’s Nojeem Lasisi and Jeff Burres, and Rudy Slizewski of TapWater and the Scott
Pemberton Band.
Oluyinka’s current artistic investigation of Contemporary dance and African traditions explore the
presence of traditional Yoruba culture in a fast changing society in Nigeria. Surrounded by a spiraling
recession and government corruption, Ibukun/The Celebration is a dedication to female leadership,

“Bliss and Other Easy Things” by Subashini Ganesan explores bliss as a state of being that is beyond leisure, indulgence, and pleasure. Weaving contemporary sequences of the ancient Bharathanatyam vocabulary in rigorous
communal and individual choreographies, she presents the idea of bliss as a sustained state of joy that
is powerfully disciplined and eternal. She will perform with her dancers from her Natya Leela Troupe
and the Anjali School of Dance (Artistic Director: Anita Menon). Ganesan is a South Asian female
immigrant to the USA, contemporary Bharatanatyam dancer, Artistic Director of Natya Leela Academy,
and the Founder/Executive Director of N.E.W.

Rogue Pack presents “Stories from MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility" for young men in the custody of Oregon Youth Authority. Ten youth, ages 18–24, will share their personal stories written during workshops conducted by playwright Francesca Piantadosi. Performed by professional actors in an evening of one-act plays directed by Patrick Walsh. Rogue Pack provides an open forum in which these incarcerated youth, who come from surprisingly diverse cultures and backgrounds, can reveal their challenges, hopes and desires in these troubled times.
