Filmmakers Lindsey Grayzel and Deia Schlosberg (Producer, HOW TO LET GO OF THE WORLD AND LOVE ALL THE THINGS CLIMATE CAN'T CHANGE) filmed "#Shut It Down" climate activists engaged in a direct action protest that manually turned off all pipelines carrying Canadian tar sands oil into the US. When the filmmakers were arrested and charged with the same felonies as the protestors, it sent reverberations through the world of professional media makers, raising concerns about law enforcement’s encroachment on freedom of the press and the impact on media coverage of climate change.

Now the two filmmakers have joined forces to bring Grayzel’s film THE RELUCTANT RADICAL to the big screen!

Ken Ward is an environmental activist [1] who served as Executive Director of NJPIRG and RIPIRG, Deputy Executive Director, Greenpeace USA, cofounder of a number of organizations, including Green Corps (Senior Trainer), National Environmental Law Center (President), Public Interest GRFX, Environmental Endowment for New Jersey, Fund for Public Interest Research and AmeriCorps Water Watch. His Response to The Death of Environmentalism, published by Grist, March 2005, has evolved into the Bright Lines project.[2] Ward is a graduate of Hampshire College (entered F1975). He is currently at work on the Jamaica Plain Green House.

All three will be present for an evening with the filmmakers, including work-in-progress clips from the film, Schlosberg’s film BACKYARD, and a panel discussion about the essential protection the First Amendment provides documentary filmmakers. Co-presented by 350PDX.

This Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Theatre, NE 41st and NE Sandy in Portland, as part of the Portland Eco-Film Festival.

There is also a kickstarter campaign to help finance the film's completion: bit.ly/reluctantradical
