Please join us on Monday, February 26 at 6:30pm as co-host Emma Lugo interviews Helen Caddes about the exoneration of Kirstin Blaise Lobato.  Lobato spent 17 years in prison for a wrongful conviction.  Incarcerated when she was only 18 years old, she maintained her innocence throughout her conviction.  Caddes was a long time supporter of Lobato and her innocence, cofounded the wrongful conviction campaign for Lobato and maintained her website.  We will discuss the case of Kirstin and the role supporters can play in the successful exoneration of a wrongfully convicted person, such as Helen and the Innocence Project played in the successful exoneration of Kirstin Lobato.

Lobato, a victim of a violent attempted rape, was targeted by the police solely on a hearsay statement made by a third party regarding the initial crime for which Lobato defended herself.  Kirstin was then twice victimized by becoming implicated in a murder that she had no connection to, no physical evidence, no personal relationship or history, and no reason for police to suspect her in relation to the crime she was charged for other than a third party statement regarding a crime for which Lobato was a victim.

From the Innocence Project : “Despite the strong evidence that Ms. Lobato played no role in this crime . . . the police focused exclusively and inexplicably on her as a suspect,” said Vanessa Potkin, Post-Conviction Litigation Director for the Innocence Project, which is affiliated with Cardozo School of Law. “As a result, Ms. Lobato has spent all of her young adulthood wrongfully incarcerated for a crime she did not commit.
