OSP Uhuru Sasa Talent Show

On June 12, 2018 the Uhuru Sasa Cultural Club held its annual Talent Show inside the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.  Host Karen James recorded the show at OSP and interviewed the men about their performances.     

Uhuru Sasa, which means ‘Freedom Now’ in Swahili, is a Club by and for prisoners and offers programs and holds annual events such as their Poetry Share, MLK, Jr. Day, Kwanzaa celebration.  The public is welcome to attend these events and can reach the Club through their OSP Staff Advisor at (503) 378-2289.

“Uhuru Sasa was established in 1968, to develop our members culturally, vocationally, and educationally.  To prepare our members to earn a living and become an asset to their communities.  To develop our members into leaders so that they will be of service within the communities to which they will return. To teach them to better understand politics, economics, and social consequences. To instill into each individual a sense of pride, in being a member of the African-American community. To teach our members the history of Africa and African-American people. Their contributions to the world and the United States of America, and their need for education so they will be able to guide their own destinies.”
