Before a plethora of proposals for coal and oil terminals starting popping up in the Pacific Northwest a few years ago, there was Liquid Natural Gas, or LNG. Intense public opposition to coal and oil terminals and trains prevented virtually all of them from being built. But LNG facilities in Coos Bay, Oregon and Tacoma, Washington, are still working their way through the permitting process.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with two organizers who are fighting LNG in the Northwest. Regna Merritt, Healthy Climate Program Director at Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, talks about what's happening with the massive Jordan Cove LNG export terminal proposed for Coos Bay. Claudia Riedener, co-founder of Redefine Tacoma, tells us about Puget Sound Energy's proposal to build a complex hybrid LNG fuel hub and storage facility in the Port of Tacoma.

Regna Merritt is the Healthy Climate Program Director at Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility. A retired Physician Assistant, she works with health professionals and effective regional coalitions to stabilize our climate and prevent the negative health impacts of fossil fuels.  She is the co-director of the Power Past Coal coalition, serves on the Executive Committee of Stand Up to Oil and is working with a new regional coalition staving off fracked gas projects.

Claudia Riedener is a ceramic artist and activist in Tacoma, and co-founder ot the grassroots group Redefine Tacoma.

There will be a Puget Sound Clean Air Agency public hearing on the Puget Sound Energy Liquefied Natural Gas Project at the Rialto Theater, 310 S 9th St, Tacoma WA 98402 on Tuesday, October 30th. Two sessions are scheduled: 2 pm-5 pm and 6:30 pm-10 pm.
