Up With Riders! OPAL campaign

OPAL Enviromental Justice Oregon has a new campaign to stop fare hikes and win expansion of fareless, decriminalized public transportation. This campaign no longer accepts that transportation must be a private, for-profit system that excludes and criminalizes our communities, chokes our airways and streets, and destabilizes our climate. It demands that mass transit must become a public service which excludes no person due to lack of payment, is controlled democratically by the people who rely most upon it, and serves everyone to the maximum extent possible.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Orlando Lopez Bautista and Tristan Isaac, community organizers with OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon and Bus Riders Unite. Orlando has organized transit-dependent people through Bus Riders Unite for the past four years. He has organized farmworkers, students, and transit riders for much of the last decade.
