Like New Orleans' Ninth Ward after Katrina, Houston after Harvey and Puerto Rico after Maria (though clearly on a lesser scale), the Yankton Sioux tribe in southeastern South Dakota has been reeling from the effects of the "bomb cyclone" that hit the region in March, continued flooding, and a seemingly uncaring state government that has refused to send nearby National Guard units to assist.
Local writer, activist and Wednesday Talk Radio co-host Jacqueline Keeler, an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux tribe, recently went to South Dakota to see for herself and report on her tribe's situation. This piece appeared in Indian Country Today:
