Tune in for this full hour of the Bread and Roses recurring segment “Doin’ Things” where we talk to women and gender non-conforming folks, well, doin’ things. Executive Producer Pamela Santos talks to Melika Belhaj about self-care, NBA Finals and love of basketball, authenticity, art and food (for the body and the spirit). Join us for a timely and also ever-relevant conversation about what it means to move on and take care of community the week after Antifa counter-protests in downtown Portland erupted in violence and the city continues to heal after white supremacist attack on the MAX.
Melika Belhaj is a Moroccan American writer and youth educator. Her work explores the dynamics of authenticity, tradition, and identity. She wrote and designed Binti: Daughter of Arab America in 2016 and is currently one half of Ya Banat, a storytelling project reframing narratives of the North African Diaspora. In February, Melika offered atay and stories of Home alongside Andrea Telles + Blanca S. Villalobos of Pochas Radicales @ IPRC for Stacey Tran's series Tender Table. Melika offers pop-up dinners that provide space for artists and community to connect and build. In her free time she plays basketball.
