Highlights from three classic concerts from 1969-1972.

Today on The Songcircle, it’s my last show of June (DJ Dan S. guest-hosts next week) so we’re closing out Black Music Month — and the week of Juneteenth — with a program drawn from three great concert documentaries and their soundtracks: the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, as belatedly immortalized in Questlove’s 2021 Oscar winner Summer of Soul; American artists performing in Ghana for 1971’s Soul to Soul; and the legendary Wattstax concert from Los Angeles in 1972. We’ll hear dynamic performances by Sly & the Family Stone, Nina Simone, Santana, Ike & Tina Turner, The Staple Singers, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and others.

The 1971 film Soul to Soul was restored and reissued in 2008, on DVD with an accompanying soundtrack CD. Tracks from the CD are labeled “soundtrack;” tracks I digitally extracted from the DVD are labeled “film.” Sadly, the release is now out of print, though used copies can be found online.
