Views, Reviews, and Interviews from a Socialist-Feminist, Anti-racist, Anti-colonial and LGBTQ-positive Perspective

Norm Diamond hosts this episode of the Old Mole, which includes the following segments:

Water Wars: Water wastage, access to water, and water packaging are key issues in world-wide struggles around equity and climate change. Laurie Mercier interviews Daniel Jaffee, professor at Portland State University, on his important new book, Unbottled: The Fight against Plastic Water and for Water Justice.

The Other 9/11: On our September 11 program, we examined the 1973 coup in Chile that overthrew a democratically elected socialist government. Old Mole Luisa Martinez was in Chile for the 50-year commemoration. She talks with Norm Diamond about what it was like to participate in the events there.

Pablo Larraín’s new film, El Conde, released to coincide with that commemoration, reimagines Augusto Pinochet, leader of the coup, as a vampire, still hovering over Chile. Norm discusses the film and the persistence of Pinochet’s terrible legacy.

The Great Offshore Grounds: Local author Vanessa Veselka has written a wonderful novel, The Great Offshore Grounds, full of insights into class and gender, and beautifully written. Patricia Kullberg presents excerpts from the novel as Norm Diamond reviews it.
