On today’s show, we celebrate Black History Month with a rebroadcast of our interview with Sidney Morrison, author of Frederick Douglass: A Novel from Portland’s Hawthorne Books. Sidney’s book is historical fiction at its most engaging, enlightening, and inspiring, about a great man, a former slave who, through his speeches and writing, helped end slavery in the US. Given the current administration’s embrace of white supremacy, Douglass’ life is a reminder of the power of speech, and art, in fighting oppression and initiating change.

In Douglass' own words: "If there is no struggle, there is no progress... Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

My conversation with Sidney originally aired on 7/25/24.
