There are more than 27 million slaves in the world today, more than at the height of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Each year, an estimated 200,000 children are at high risk for sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in the United States alone. Human trafficking earns an estimated 32 billion dollars a year and ranks 2nd only to the illegal drug trade in profitability. The majority of those forced into slavery are children and females, and 70% of female victims are forced into the commercial sex industry.
If you think that human trafficking happens only in other countries, you might be surprised to learn that it is happening right here in Portland, and right in our own backyards. The Not for Sale Campaign equips and mobilizes Smart Activists to deploy innovative solutions to re-abolish slavery in their own backyards and across the globe.
Together, as modern day abolitionists, we can end slavery in our lifetime.
