Portland Kneads You. — A cooperative event to break the world record for the longest massage chain. Announcing participant pre-registration.

PORTLAND, OREGON (July 28, 2011) — Thanks to our close-knit community and Common Ground Wellness Cooperative (CGWC), Portland soon may top the charts for more than its rain: Breaking The Guinness Book world record for the longest massage train. On Saturday, August 27th at 12 p.m., participants will attempt to beat the current Guinness record of 1,223 people. That record was made in Thailand in 2010, where the train lasted five minutes.

Check-in time will be 10:30 a.m., August 27th at Common Ground Wellness Cooperative, 5010 NE 33rd Ave. in Portland.  To beat the record, 1,224 or more people must be ready to go by 12pm when the long line will head down NE Webster Street.  Afterwards, the event will continue with a celebration of food, music, massage samples and other festivities. It all commemorates CGWC becoming a cooperative that’s dedicated to providing a relaxing and healing space for everyone in our community.  This is largely due to self-employed, peer-reviewed practitioners who provide professional services at much lower fees than luxury spas.

“CGWC has become a cooperative, owned by patrons, workers and health care practitioners,” said CGWC spokesperson Trillium Shannon. Becoming a co-op allows CGWC to more actively involve patrons in the business.  For instance, this year patrons were involved in electing their representatives to the board.  The community bath house and healing center has a goal of 450 new member owners by the end of the year.  According to Richelle Corbo, Executive Director, “It’s like the old adage, ‘There’s strength in numbers.’ The more member-owners we have, the stronger we become and the better we serve our community.”

The key to CGWC’s success could be their focus of returning urban dwellers to the days when humans openly gathered around heat and water for the sake of health, spirit and community.  These natural ways help people achieve wellness through detoxification, stress reduction and togetherness.
