The Columbia River Gorge is a land of mountains, high desert plateaus, rivers, canyons, oak savannas, lush valleys and an amazing diversity of plant and animal life. And there's a lot going on in the Columbia Gorge - including some of the most significant environmental campaigns in the region - that get overlooked by the media in Portland. Into this void has bounded Columbia Insight, an online, nonprofit publication and a regional news source for communities throughout the Columbia River Basin. Their mission is to inspire, educate, and foster a sense of community around environmental issues affecting the Basin by publishing original, fair and balanced journalism that tells the untold stories of the region.
On this episode of Locus Focus we get to meet some of the folks behind this endeavor. We talk with Columbia Insight's publisher Susan Hess and Managing Editor Dac Collins about what their publication has been focusing on, and we'll get deeper into some areas of special interest these days, like the plight of the Columbia River salmon that swim past their office in Hood River.

Dac Collins is a wilderness advocate who is helplessly attracted to moving water. Based in White Salmon, Washington, his stories on the environment and outdoor pursuits have appeared in periodicals throughout the Pacific Northwest.
