An Earth Day discussion of false hopes and environmental delusions

Today's guest, Max Wilbert, is a community organizer, wilderness guide, photographer, and author, most recently of Bright Green Lies: How The Environmental Movement Lost Its Way and What We Can Do About It, which was released in March. A third-generation dissident, he came of age in a family of anti-war and undoing racism activists in post-WTO Seattle. Max’s essays have been published in Earth Island Journal, Backcountry Journal, and Dissident Voice. He has been part of political and environmental work for nearly 20 years.

In mid-January, Max helped start the Protect Thacker Pass protest camp on Northern Paiute territory in Nevada, just south of the Oregon border. The camp has now been in place for more than three months, and is the center of a growing resistance to open-pit lithium mining planned for the region. Today he joins us from his home, in rural Lane County, where he is visiting family between long stints organizing at Thacker Pass.

A new documentary based on the book Bright Green Lies premiers online on April 22, for Earth Day.
