Julie Rall - "A Soft Landing" at Building 5

On Tuesday January 18, 2022, Joseph Gallivan interviews artist Julie Rall about her installation “A Soft Landing” which is up now through January 30, 2022. Rall talks about how a parachute and a labyrinth made of salt can symbolize her feelings about how COVID and global warming will end, how labyrinths are made for contemplation, and how her dad’s old tent from the 1960s can still serve as a mental refuge today.

Julie has been practicing her art in Portland, Oregon since 1985. Julie is currently renting a studio at NW Marine Art Works since November of 2020 and has been exploring the possibilities of mark making with squeegees on acrylic panels. She is searching for the limits of possibility in her paintings.  How can we embrace the connection between memory and place? In Julie's paintings patterns and colors create a visual language that evokes depth of space in the intimacy of a small space.
