On Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 11.30 a.m. Joseph Gallivan interviews artists Shu-Ju Wang and Lynn Yarne about the new mural at Lincoln High School called Restoration Roadmaps. They talk about how they used historical documents to come up with the design of animals and plants surrounding a map of Goose Hollow, the importance of consulting students about what they wanted included on the mural, and the passage from gouache drawings to finished product.

Plaque description: The very place where you are standing was once a large farm where Chinese migrants grew vegetables that supplied Portland, an important site where people of many backgrounds traded speaking Chinook jargon; it was also once home to many animal and plant species. It is unceded Indigenous land.
Restoration Roadmaps combines or overlays different forms of maps to describe Goose Hollow, from historical to a hoped for future. The topographic contours of the map are formed using a collection of responses from a series of workshops that took place in the fall of 2022 in which participants learned about Goose Hollow’s ecological and cultural histories and responded to this prompt about the future of Goose Hollow:
What kind of changes to the area would you like to see
going into the future? How can you make that a reality?
