Interview with Dr. Peter Spendelow

Learn about the environmental impact of our food systems.

"That Vegan Show" happily welcomes returning guest, Dr. Peter Spendelow, to share the Environmental Impacts of Food for Earth Month. Dr. Spendelow has a Ph.D. in Zoology, but for more than 38 years has worked as an environmental scientist at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). His department, specializing in recycling and solid waste, has recently renamed itself the Materials Management section. This reflects a growing understanding that the main environmental impact of materials comes from their production, not from their end-of-life disposal and recycling. They have also found that food is probably the most impactful of all the materials we produce. Join us to hear this informative, and perhaps not-well-understood perspective.

Peter was the President of Northwest VEG for 12 years. He coordinated the planning committee for the Northwest Health and Nutrition Conference – a professional conference giving certified continuing education credits for doctors, dietitians, naturopaths, nurses, and other health professionals, for 9 years. He continues to be very active with NW VEG.  NW VEG educates and encourages people to make vegan choices for a healthy, sustainable, and compassionate world. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year!
