The Bear Went Over the Mountain...

The Bark Out website features a photo of  the last sliver of old-growth near the lower Clackamas River that the BLM wants to cut down for a new logging road –  that’s why they call it a “logging” road, right?

Keeping an eye on the Mt. Hood is a balls-out, full-time, fair weather or foul endeavor.  It’s what Bark Out does.  Taking a break from the task up on the – where else? Clackamas River, Bark Out’s grassroots goddess, Meredith Cocks was surprised to discover that California Land Management (aka-Mt. Hood Recreation) is now charging people to park on the side of Hwy 224 to swim at the Big Eddy swimming hole.  Have a look at the website; it’s not too late to ‘liberate the ‘Hood’

Sweet Home - But Not Sweet School - Chicago

Yesterday The Chicago Teachers Union said it will strike at 12:01 a.m. on Monday,, if teachers do not get a new contract - no extensions, no retreat and no surrender.  If the teachers walk out this will be the biggest labor action in recent history. involving around 30,000 educator.

On Wednesday the union filed unfair labor practice charges against the Chicago school system .

The union filed complaints with the state labor board accusing the school district of violating state law by unilaterally imposing changes in teachers' working conditions - including new teacher evaluation procedures - while both parties are still at the bargaining table.

The union also charges that Chicago Public Schools, which has more than 400,000 students enrolled, is refusing to allow arbitration on some complaints and has intimidated teachers picketing at a school.

Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Becky Carroll said the district was disappointed, and called on the union to focus its energy on the contract talks.
