Granito is an expression of the indigenous people of Guatemala...none of us can do it alone, each must put in their granito, their tiny grain of sand. Direct descendants of the ancient Maya, the indigenous of Guatemala make up 40% of the population. With the help of the U.S. government, as many of 200,000 of them and their supporters, the future leaders of Guatemala, were masacred in the early 1980s. Documentary filmaker Pamela Yates witnessed the genocide and found she had her own granito, evidence to help nail a dictator. The trial of Efrain Rios Montt is now underway: the first time in the Americas that a former head of state is being tried for genocide. If you've ever eaten a banana, had a cup of coffee, or wondered if dictators can be brought to justice, this story is for you. Join us for the discussion.
