Bread and Roses celebrates 35 years on the KBOO airwaves, the longest-running feminist radio show in the country!
We welcome Bread and Roses founder, Susan Dobrof, and 90's collective member, Pamlin Pegg. We'll discuss the early days of the collective, play clips from the Bread and Roses archives, and honor all the women over the years who lent their voices and energy to keep feminist radio alive.
Hosted by Delphine Criscenzo and Leigh Anne Kranz
A Poem by Susan Dobrof, Bread and Roses founder.
(A journal entry, 1976)
Shall I spend my life
picking through the brown, shining tape.
Recording, editing, playing with sounds,
with events.
I have spent a day
sitting before a tape machine.
With no plan, and little engineering ability.
Among the patch cords and reels.
I was sharp
and careful of combinations.
Until stoned tonight, I did
something upside down or backwards and
swam through the brown stuff
‘til I finally threw it out.
The point is, I like it.
Watching my fingers
clumsy with splice tape
Listening to hours of jumble become
minutes of intelligible, exciting stuff.
The main point is,
demystifying the machinery
being competent
understanding that maybe
I can learn anything
and use these tools.
P.S. “Tonight was the show—amid ridiculous engineering difficulties, this thing came off, and was beautiful, a creation! Really, I haven’t felt so skilled and pleased with my abilities since, I don’t know when.”

Michigan Womyn's Music Festival
I appreciate what Michfest is and means to a lot of people, but, to continually mention it without a single word about the transphobic policies of it's organizers is a disservice - I'm only asking that it be acknowledged.
