Filmmakers Cynthia Lopez and Juvie Hall want to talk to women roller derby players around the world. Join Dmae for a look at the their new work-in-progress film Flat Track Around The World that filmed in Mexico. We'll hear clips from the film and find out how they're getting ready for their next round of filming as they head for Egypt and Israel.
When Cynthia Lopez and Juvie Hall met they instantly realized they needed to make a film together about Juvie's passion to play roller derby. So they started to investigate women's roller derby, the fastest growing sport around the world. Juvie is currently co-captain of the Guns N Rollers in Portland’s Rose City Rollers roller derby league.
"Roller derby isn't about women demanding equality or the right to participate in an existing sport or structure,” said Juvie Hall during the talk. “It isn't about beating The Man at his own game. It's about creating a whole new system, based on a fundamentally different set of values."

More about the filmmakers:
Juvie Hall (aka Diana Fedoroff) was once an attorney but changed her life by becoming a roller derby player. She began dreaming up the Flat Track Around the World project after reading a quote from Howard Thurman in which she paraphrases: “Don’t do what the world needs; find out what makes you come alive and then go do that thing, because ultimately what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Recognizing the huge impact roller derby had on her own life, Juvie wanted to explore women in other cultures playing roller derby. She is currently a freelance writer, editor, and budding documentary filmmaker.
Cynthia Lopez made her first film at age eleven, the print of which was tragically lost. Cynthia has written, produced, directed, shot and edited both documentary and narrative fiction projects since 1998. She has made many short films. Flat Track Around the World is her first feature-length documentary. She's also currently co-producing and directing another documentary , called Who Am I to Stop It, about three Pacific Northwest artists with brain injuries, and how those injuries have impacted their art.
