The MHCC Interdisciplinary Reading Series is proud to bring you a weekend of writing and performance by internationally known writers Kimberly Dark and Christopher Ryan The speakers will each lead a workshop open to students, faculty, and the community on the theme of Writing The Body.
Kimberly Dark is a writer, storyteller and speaker who helps audiences discover that we are creating the world, even as it creates us. She’s the author of five award-winning performance scripts and a number of educational programs regarding the body in culture – how appearances and identities influence our experiences in the world related to gender, race, body type/size, beauty, ability, etc. Dark blogs regularly for Huffington Post and Ms Magazine. She has traveled the English-speaking world doing performances and keynote presentations at colleges and universities, conferences, theatres and festivals in the U.S., Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland and other nations for the past twenty years. She lectures in a graduate program in Sociological Practice at California State University, San Marcos.
Dr. Christopher Ryan is the New York Times best-selling author of the book Sex at Dawn. Christopher has been a featured speaker all over the word, from TED in Long Beach, CA to The Festival of Dangerous Ideas at the Sydney Opera House. His work has been featured in major national and international media, and widely across the Internet, including his own acclaimed podcast, “Tangentially Speaking.” In his mid-30s, Chris decided to pursue doctoral studies in Psychology. Drawing upon his multi-cultural experience, his research focused on trying to distinguish the human from the cultural, first by focusing on “ethnobotony”—studying how various societies interact with novel states of consciousness and sacred plants—and later, by looking at similarly diverse cultural perspectives on sexuality. His doctoral dissertation analyzed the prehistoric roots of human sexuality, and was guided by the world-renowned psychologist, Stanley Krippner. This formed the basis of the research that would lead to the writing of Sex at Dawn. His work brings together relevant research in anthropology, sociology, psychology and human sexuality to explore the core issues of the human experience. Often bizarre, always thought-provoking, Dr. Ryan is a one of a kind speaker who is sure to entertain as much as challenge any audience.
