Katherine Dunn

Legendary Portland writer Katherine Dunn died last week at the age of 70.

Dunn is perhaps best known for her novel Geek Love, a finalist for the National Book Award in 1989. Geek Love's main character, Olympia Binewski, works at a radio station not unlike KBOO Community Radio. Which is no coincidence. Dunn herself was a volunteer at KBOO during the 1970s, reading stories for the program Gremlin Time.

Dunn took the pseudonym "Red Ryder" for the show. And she gave Matthew Clark, her friend and Gremlin Time producer, the alias "Fortunato".

Matthew was kind enough to join us for this evening's KBOO News, and share his memories of Katherine both on and off the air.
