Trees play an extraordinarily important role in our cityscapes. They are living landmarks that define space, cool the air, soothe our psyches, connect us to nature and even improve our health.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Jill Jonnes, author of URBAN FORESTS: A Natural History of Trees and People in the American Cityscape, about how urban trees have come to define the cities and neighborhoods we live in. We’ll talk about blights like Dutch Elm Disease, that have wreaked havoc on urban trees, and why it matters so much that we not only protect the urban trees we have but also dedicate ourselves to increasing the urban tree canopy.

Jill Jonnes is the author of Eiffel’s TowerConquering GothamEmpires of Light, and South Bronx Rising.
