The Car-Free Portland Conference began today with volunteers tearing up asphalt in a section of northeast Portland.
The area will be used for gardening and community space.

The conference is scheduled to continue until Sunday.
On Sunday, the conference will culminate with the Portland Parkways event, in which the city will shut down a six-mile area in North Portland to cars and trucks.
