Senator Ron Wyden has drafted a bill to end the logging of old-growth forests in Oregon, while also addressing the backlog of thinning projects in forests at risk of summer fires, disease and insects.
He released a draft Thursday for the public to review before he introduces it in the Congress.
He says the bill would forbid logging of trees more than 120 years old from wetter federal forests mostly in western Oregon. In drier forests, trees older than 150 would be protected.
He says ending the legal gridlock over old-growth timber and expediting thinning projects will put thousands of Oregonians back to work in the woods in the process.
