Blue Note Records is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Founded in 1939 by a German Jewish refugee from the Holocaust named Alfred Lion, Blue Note is by far the most respected record label in jazz history. On Saturday August 10, jazz critic and radio programmer Rick Mitchell will honor Blue Note’s legacy by playing great music from the vast Blue Note catalogue -- from Sidney Bechet to Wayne Shorter to Norah Jones -- on The Motif: Imagine a Jazz Sensibility from 2-5 p.m. on KBOO, 90.7 FM in Portland.
