For more than twenty years, Naomi Klein has been the foremost chronicler of the economic war waged on both people and planet—and an unapologetic champion of a sweeping environmental agenda with justice at its center. In her latest book On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal, she reports from the frontlines of contemporary natural disaster, presenting prescient advisories and dire warnings of what future awaits us if we refuse to act, as well as hopeful glimpses of what a far better future can look like.
On this episode of Locus Focus we air an interview conducted with Naomi Klein on September 25, while she was in Portland speaking at Powell's Books. We'll also hear some clips of speeches and music recorded at several recent rallies at Washington's Department of Ecology and State Capitol, calling on the state's agencies and elected officials - especially Governor Jay Inslee - to act on their lofty rhetoric - and stop the proposed methanol refinery and LNG facility from being built in Kalama and Tacoma.
A note of hope: On October 9, the Washington Department of Ecology refused to issue a key permit for the proposed Kalama methanol refinery, instead requesting more information about the project’s climate pollution. Without the Department of Ecology’s approval, the proposal for the world’s largest fracked gas-to-methanol refinery cannot proceed. Read the Department of Ecology’s request for more information.
