Spain Rodriguez was one of the most prolific and visionary members of the underground cartoonist movement in the 1960’s and 70’s. He covered the 1968 Democratic National Convention for the newspaper The East Village Other, he ran with the Road Vultures Motorcycle Club, and he created celebrated comic book characters, including the urban superhero “Trashman.”
Spain visited the KBOO studios in November of 2008 to talk with Bill Dodge about his graphic biography of Che Guevara, a book which Art Spiegelman described as “brilliant and radical.”
At the time of this conversation, Spain was battling cancer, and he died in November of 2012, at the age of 72.
