Dr. Zomb hosts West African music discoverer Chris Kirkley

Today's show is hosted by Dr. Zomb of Dr. Zomb's Stereo Obscura. His guest will be Christopher Kirkley, a Portlander who travels to West Africa to bring back the latest sounds from the region. Here is Chris's description of his project:

"Sahelsounds is a project begun in 2009 exploring the cultural and musical phenoma of the Sahel region of West Africa. The Sahel is a landscape of dusty scrubland and parched earth, sparsely populated by nomads and semi-nomadic herders as well as first generation urban youth on motorbikes with cellphone memory cards and usb keys dangling around their necks. Through live musical field recordings, mp3 archiving from cybercafes and cellphones, and digging through radio archives across Mauritania, Northern Senegal, and Mali, Sahelsounds uses sound to transmit a story."

Chris has compiled some of his ongoing collection into an lp on Mississippi Records called "Ishilan N-Tenere" as well as on several Sahelsounds mix cassettes. For more information, tune in and also check out http://www.sahelsounds.com
