Activism has consequences. The peace and anti-nukes movements of the '50s and beyond were the major reason nuclear weapons were never used in war after 1945, according to historian Lawrence Wittner. In this interview, he talks with Clayton Morgareidge about his research showing the surprising influence of peace activism on governments.
Wittner, a long time peace activist and historian based in Albany, New York, will speak this Friday, April 2, 3 p.m. at Portland State University in Smith Memorial Union Multicultural Center on "How the grassroots disarmament movements saved us from nuclear war." His new book Confronting the Bomb A Short History of the World Nuclear Disarmament Movement will be available.
